Do essential oils work for migraines?
If you Google “essential oils” or look on social media, you will see many people advertising essential oils as a cure all for all kinds of illnesses. I have always been quite skeptical of anything that claims to cure everything, but you can’t knock it until you try it right? So I did!
I started trying essential oils last year after seeing a post on Instagram about how Peppermint essential oil can get rid of a migraine fast. I’d heard this before and it had never helped me. However, this woman that was on Instagram had a method of using the oil that I hadn’t heard before. She recommended putting a drop or two on your thumb and holding it on the roof of your mouth for about a minute. I made a mental note and decided that I would buy some Peppermint essential oil and give it a try.
When I had my next migraine, I decided to try the Peppermint oil. To my great surprise, it worked! My migraine wasn’t completely gone but it had greatly improved. I thought to myself that maybe there was something to these essential oils. So I began to do more research and what I found really changed the way that I treat my migraines.
So what are essential oils?
The simple answer is that essential oils are the highly concentrated oils that are found in plants. This oil can be found in all parts of the plant for example the bark, roots, leaves or flowers. Companies may use steam or water in order to extract the oils from the plant. These oils will have the concentrated properties of the plant, it’s smell and healing properties.
Essential oils have been used throughout history for the healing benefits that they can provide. The same qualities that protect the plant can also protect and benefit humans. The most common use for essential oils for therapeutic purposes is aromatherapy. Where the fragrance from plants are used to calm the mind, purify the air or reduce the chance for infections.
How can essential oils help migraines?
From my research I found that there are several essential oils that have been studied by scientists and have been shown effective for relieving migraine headaches. Not only can essential oils help with relaxation, sleep, mental clarity but they can also greatly reduce PAIN!
How to use essential oils
Here are three ways that essential oils can be used.
- Essential Oil Diffuser
First let’s talk about using essential oils topically. So if you go on Pinterest or Google you will find a myriad of recipes for essential oil mixes that can be applied topically. I even have a special recipe that works wonders on migraine headaches! The one word of caution to remember is this: Dilute your oils with a carrier oil like coconut or almond oil! This is important because as you remember essential oils are concentrated. So if you apply them directly to the skin it will often cause irritation, so if you choose to use it topically, follow a recipe and make sure you dilute it with another oil!
Now what about using diffusers? There are many types of diffusers on the market that you can use for essential oils. These are small devices that will distribute the oil into the air as a mist and are used for aromatherapy. After doing a lot of research on the best type to use I chose one from Organic Aromas. The reason I chose their diffuser is because it doesn’t use heat to distribute the scent. Heat can destroy some of the beneficial properties in the oils and prevent you from having its full benefit.
After contacting the company, they graciously let me try out one of their diffusers I was interested in and let me tell you it has been great. I really love that it’s quiet because when you have a migraine, you know that sound can really make the pain worse. This diffuser is powerful and can really fill a large area quickly. So another benefit is that you don’t have to use it for long. So if you are looking for a diffuser definitely check out Organic Aromas.
Finally, let’s talk about using them internally. So while you can use essential oils internally with success, I will tell you a word of caution. You really want to make sure that the essential oils you use are food quality. There are many companies that sell essential oils but as with any product, the quality can differ. So do your research and look at how the oils are processed to make sure it will be safe for you to use internally.
